Here you will find most of the information you might need about our school.
Something missing? Let us know and we will add it.
Please let the office know as soon as possible if your child is away.
Absences can be reported through the EDGE App (preferable) or by calling 06 867 5779 or emailing kirsty@makauri.school.nz
We also need to know on following days if your child is still away. Absences of longer than three days need to be discussed with the Principal.
If your child is late to school, please send them to the office before going to class.
Accidents
Should a child suffer an accident at school he/she will be attended to and, if it is felt that the child needs to go home the parents or emergency contacts will be informed immediately. Parents will be informed of all head injuries. Please ensure that your contact details are kept up to date at all times.
Address and Telephone
It is important that our records regarding home addresses, telephone numbers, emergency contacts and family doctors are kept current. Should there be any change, please inform the school as soon as possible.
After School Care
We host an After School Care service run by 'Events 4 All' which is an accredited after school care programme.
The service is available for all students and is operated independently of the school. The hours are from 2.30pm - 5:30pm.
Phone Colleen Williams on 867 7801 or 027 531 5756 for further information.
Attendance
The Education Act requires all children enrolled at a school to attend school whenever it is open unless they are unable to attend due to illness or other special circumstances. The school is required to report unexplained absences, or frequent absences that cause concern. Frequent absences can dramatically affect a child’s progress at school.
Assemblies
Assemblies are held on Friday afternoons at 1.45 pm. The seven classes take turns to share learning at the assemblies and entertain the school with items arising from the classroom programmes. Parents are invited to attend assemblies. Certificates are presented at assemblies and parents will be notified if their child is being presented with a certificate.
Before school drop offs
We appreciate that our parent community have jobs and places to be in the mornings, however, we ask that children are not dropped off at school until 8:00am, prior to this time children are not allowed in classes or supervised. Teachers and school staff are not available before this time and this creates issues around student safety.
Bikes in Schools
We are fortunate enough to be part of the Bikes in Schools initiative. This means we have a dedicated bike track as well as bikes and helmets for our tamariki to learn biking skills and safety. Classes go out for guided sessions with their teachers.

BYOD
We allow students in years 3 - 6 to bring their own Chomebook to school. These are set up on our school network and are used during classroom learning. Children who do not bring their own Chromebook will be provided with one to use at school.
Bus
We are fortunate enough to have access to school buses run by Go Bus Gisborne. The buses are free for children who live and travel within our school zone. However, if you live outside of our school zone and travel in to attend Makauri School or use the buses to travel outside of the school zone at the end of the day, the buses have a fee. Travel outside of the school zone is not covered by the funding provided by the Minsitry of Education. For out of zone travel each trip costs $1.50. 10 trip concession cards can be purchased from the office.
Please see bus routes below
Communications
Email, Facebook, and EDGE are our primary forms of communication. Here we share newsletters, upcoming events, term dates and important updates.
Our school newsletter is published fortnightly and emailed to parents as well as being posted on our School Facebook page (also on school website). Newsletters contain information for upcoming events and general reminders, and updates on what has been going on at school.
Complaints
For classroom issues parents must approach the class teacher first. If after this approach the problem is unresolved contact with the Principal may then be made. The Board of Trustees has a Complaints Policy. This Policy is via School docs if you wish to see it.
1. Go to schooldocs.co.nz
2. Click Search for your school.
3. Start typing the school’s name and select it from the dropdown list.

Please note: Enrolling online requires confirmation from school administration and your child will enter the status of Pre Enrolled. One of our staff members will make contact after you have filled in the form.
We may have space for out of zone enrolments in some year levels of the school. Please contact the office for more information.
The school has a Facebook Page ‘Makauri School’. Photos of class activities are posted regularly, but children are not named.
Each classroom has a private Facebook page where photos and learning are shared. Please talk to your class teacher to gain access.
Friends of Makauri (FOMS)
Friends of Makauri (FOM) is a dedicated group of volunteer parents from Makauri School who collaborate to organise and promote community engagement events. While their primary focus is on building a strong, connected school community, they also occasionally engage in fundraising activities to support the school. If you're interested in learning more or wish to join or help the group, please contact the school Principal, Cambell McNaught.
The School Day is 8.30am - 2.30pm (We ask that children are not dropped off before 8:00am)
Morning Tea is 10am - 10.25am
Lunch is 12noon - 1.00pm
Interviews
A meet the teacher evening is held at the beginning of each year to get to know the structures and rountines of childrens' classrooms.
Parent teacher interviews are held in term 2 after the reports go home to discuss learning and progress.
Student led conferences are held in term 4 to enable students the opportunity to share their learning.
Jewellery
Children are discouraged from wearing jewellery to school. Children with pierced ears should wear sleepers or studs.
Kapa Haka
Our children participate in weekly Kapa haka with Papa Pura and Koka Boo. They teach us tikanga, Te Reo and waiata. We perform at the Turanga Kapa Haka Festival each year in Term 4.
Life Education
The school takes part biannually in the health programme run by the Life Education Trust.
Lost Property
We would appreciate your co-operation in naming your children’s clothing. Children should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own clothing and to take home the items they bring to school each day. At the end of each term the lost property will be displayed in the quad for parents and children to pick up. We will be holding lost property for no longer than a week or two, as we seem to collect a huge amount. We do not have space to store it and it does get rather smelly. We also encourage that children do not wear ‘Label’ clothing; if this is lost it can be distressing as they cost a lot of money.
Lunches
Lunches can be bought each Wednesday, unless you have been informed otherwise. We get our lunch orders from Makaraka Dairy and Bakery. Money should be in an envelope marked with the child’s name, room number, the items required and the correct amount of money enclosed. List of items that may be purchased are available from the school office. The Dairy have asked that it is cash only.
Makeup
Children are discouraged from wearing makeup to school. We may request parental permission if makeup is required for a school production or Moko for kapa haka festivals.
Medication
It is essential for all children requiring medication at school to take it to the school office. All medicines must be clearly labelled with the child’s name. Medicines must not be kept in bags or classrooms. The Secretary should be made aware of students requiring medication during the school day and they will supervise the dispensing after the school has received signed consent from parents. Parents of children with allergies and asthma are requested to take responsibility for checking that medication kept at school is up to date.
Money
All payments to the school should be in a clearly marked envelope and brought to the school office for receipting. Children should not bring additional money or other valuables to school.
Newsletters
A school newsletter is written every second Wednesday and emailed to each family. Please take the time to read these as they keep you up to date with the goings on in the school. It will also be posted to the school Facebook page.
Parent Helpers
There are many occasions when parents are able to help with school based activities and teachers are grateful for the support they receive at these times. Parents may also be called upon to help with class trips. To conform to school policy when transporting children, parents must have a current and full driver’s license, and your vehicle must have a current registration and warrant of fitness. Seat belts must be available for all children travelling in the vehicle. Depending on the activity we will advise parents whether they require police vetting.
Records
Please ensure the office is notified of any change of address or contact numbers. This is most important, especially in the case of any emergency. A condition of enrolment at Makauri School is that you accept that your child's information will be added to our secure student management system "Edge". A copy of their Privacy Policy is available upon request.
Written reports are sent home at the end of terms 2 and 4.
At the end of Term 2 and Term 4, student Portfolios will be sent home with the children. The Portfolio contains samples of work from across the curriculum. Please read the Portfolio, discuss it with your child, comment and sign, and return the Portfolio to school.
Sporting opportunities are offered for our children to participate in. Please check notices, newsletters or Facebook for information on what is coming up and when.
Often children have the opportunity to participate in an inter-school sports day including Triathlon, Athletics, Cross Country, Netball, Rugby and Football. These are run during the school day and are most of the time one off events/tournaments. Children will be notified of opportunities to trial or compete for a spot in these events.
Outside of school sports: Lots of outside of school sports are organised by the school such as Football, Netball, Touch, Hockey, Cricket. Please read newsletters and notices to find out what is coming up and how to register.
The school buildings and grounds are smoke and Vape free at all times.

Sunsafe Policy
In Terms 1 & 4 children and teachers are required to wear hats when outside during school hours, including interval and lunchtime. Pupils without hats have to play under the sun shelter. Hats with the school logo can be purchased at the school office for $15.00.
Sweets and Chewing Gum
Sweets and chewing gum are not permitted at school. Small chocolate biscuit snacks are acceptable.
Swimming Pool
The pool is solar heated. This allows swimming to commence early in November and extends the season to the end of March in most years.
Swimming is part of the curriculum and every child is expected to fully participate. Should a child be unable to swim for medical reasons, a written note to the teacher is required.
Toys / valuables at school

Uniform
We do not have a compulsory school uniform.
